Anime Winter 2024 Weekly Ranking April 11th to April 17th
These rankings are as of the episodes premiering April 11th to April 17th
S: Must Watch
Episodes I believe you must watch or are missing out on.
1. Mobile Suit Gundam: GQuuuuuuX. Ep.2
Wow, that was so cool! Never expected them to hit us with the origins of the red and white Gundam, moreso to find out that the red Gundam has even more mystery to it then we expected. I wonder if Char has become one with the Gundam or if the Gundam itself tookover. Whatever the case they have set up some great mysteries and built lore that is just as great. Also, I love the old school style and music they used this episode, an excellent decision given that it is representing origins here even if it is not from long ago. I could rave about the first two episodes for quite some time but I’ll leave it at this for now, watch this anime! Also, I am a newer Gundam fan but from what I see this seems to be an older fans wet dream so +10!
2. Kowloon Generic Romance. Ep. 2
Couple of things. First, Yaomei fine too. Great, with that out of the way, Kowloon Generic Romance has me by the throat. I find the mystery of Kujirai so interesting and very much look forward to what may be the case behind her missing memories. In this episode Kujirai is delving more into this mystery, while also hoping that Kudou may offer more clues. The scene where he rejects her new look broke my heart; I’ve experienced such things, and seen it many times, it’s a heart crushing experience when it comes from the person you are in love with. We are fortunate however, and the make up scene was great with Kujirai even using the opportunity to get one up. The next scene is even better however, “I’m looking at you.” Yea man, this episode was just great. Oh yea, and now we have even more mysteries building as well. Give this one a chance, it’s building to something great right now.
A: Very Good
Good episodes, anime I would recommend to someone looking for something to watch.
3. Lazarus. Ep.2
Getting more of an idea of what we’re doing with, a animated suicide squad! The trope is great if done well, and this episode does make me hopeful for what is to come. The main characters are interesting and the reason behind their gathering is very strong. I like how more people are after skinner now, each hoping to save themselves though I wonder if anyone actually cares for anyone else. At least we know the main crew needs the antidote before they all die. I hope we delve more into the characters however, it’d be nice to know more about them as their designs are killer and would depth to them. For now, their motivation is simply to survive, but I’d love to have more reason to care and root for them. Good episode however, animation is a pleasure in this one.
4. Aharen-San
The first half of this episode had my on a rollercoaster of emotions. Raido immersing himself into the game, finding a life long friend, and then the tragic end of his friend had me yelling in pain alongside Raido. Truly incredible and fun. The second half was just a reminder of why Raido is such a good character, the guy is just a character that often falls to his own imagination and wrong beliefs. Seeing him a hooligan was great, though I wonder if Aharen will ever understand just what happened this episode. 9/10, no alcohol needed.
5. Wind Breaker S2. Ep. 3
A nice conclusion to this fight with a surprise showing at the end for what is to come. I can understand Sakura’s frustrations over how things went, but I hope he understands the upper classmen would come whether they needed the help or now. Really like everyone in Furin, but it seems things are going to get difficult soon.
6. Apothecary Diaries. Ep. 38
As much as I hate MaoMao fixing everything, I do love seeing the terrible ladies in waiting get what they deserve. Still, this episode made my heartbreak for Lishu. She’s in a very unfortunate position and has even lost her mother, paired with with terrible ladies I really hope things improve for her eventually. Just seeing her lose it for the mirror was enough to make me hate the others forever now, very glad Jinshi stepped in here. Now, however, we need to save Xiaolan!
7. Witch Watch, Ep. 2
Well that was short kept secret, but I’m glad everyone seems to enjoy having a witch in their class. Flying around would be fun, though the big reveal is having an Oni in the class as well. We do have some focus on the tragedy to come, but given that this series plays with many gags there is a possibility that the tragedy is one as well.
B: Good/Solid
8. The Beginning After the End. Ep. 3
Well, the animation is still very poor but I think the biggest failure of this episode was failing to express just how long Arthur was with Syliva. Was it days, weeks, or longer? Given the quick pace it fails to grasp the audience and make Sylvia’s death impactful though this could be remedied in the future. Think of it like this, and I hate to compare them, but in Mushoku Tensei we see Rudy grow alongside Roxy while she teaches him, there is a clear passage of time expressed through the scenes or verbally. We then have the great scene where Roxy takes Rudy out of his comfort zone and it establishes just how much Roxy means to Rudy because of such actions but also through Rudy’s worshiping words. All this to say, the first three have been just fine, animation aside, but nothing special yet.
C: It’s ok/Fine
These are shows I happen to pick up but struggle to finish. Still watchable, but not without a good break in between episodes.
Yandere Dark Elf. Ep.2
We still have the issue of the MC unwilling to take base here, but at the least we have something else going on which is Mariabelle gaining a new friend and there is some interest in that. A being from another world coming into our own has always been a novel idea, and while I believe this anime won’t focus on that, I appreciate that they gave us some semblance of an arc here. I, for one, want more Yandere action however.
Makina-san's a Love Bot?! Ep. 2
Gather around gooners, and boo this man! We have another case of the too much of a gentleman to take the opportunity which is worst trend in Ecchi. I wonder if it is simply popular in other parts of the world, or if the fantasy of having a girl chase after someone but never taking it is the dream. Whatever the case, while I like Makina’s design and character, Eita is just a bore.
D: Do Not Recommend
Shows I do not recommend you not watch for various issues.
F: Bad
Anime with glaring issues that make them not only difficult to watch, but the watcher angry at times.
