Anime Summer 2024 Weekly Ranking July 26th to August 1st

These rankings are as of the episodes premiering July 26th to August 1st

S: Must Watch

Episodes I believe you must watch or are missing out on.

1. NieR:Automata Ver1.1a (Cour 2). Ep 4

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! What an episode, an absolute masterclass on building suspense and heartbreak. I must say as an anime only, the death was heartbreaking and something I did not expect at all. Watching 2B’s memories replay, the acceptance that she built emotions over the many memories she has made and had to endure was amazing, 9S's enraged reaction was just as amazing as well. I’ve always wondered about A2, but now I’m even more interested in her contribution to the story going forward. Fantastic episode once again, I sincerely hope this anime gets the recognition it deserves because it is the best anime out right now by a decent margin as well.

3. Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf. Ep. 18

Lawrence is pulling out all the stops for this. I’m glad he has decided what Holo means to him. It is the main issue around their dispute, what is Holo to Lawrence? I believe Holo’s actions are to bring out this answer, whether it be good or bad, she has prepared herself for either decision but could no longer sit and be idle as Lawrence remained indecisive. I’m not the biggest fan of her actions thus far, but I can’t blame her for doing it after their argument. Of course, I do want them to continue their journey, so I hope Lawrence will succeed.

2. Oshi No Ko. Ep. 5

The war between Akane and Kana is reaching a boiling point, but fear not for best girl Miyako is here! Wonderful to see her again. Without a doubt, the best part of the episode is Akane declaring her conviction to Aqua. Her dedication to him, alongside her innate talents make her terrifying as I believe she will do whatever is needed to help Aqua. I understand Ruby’s anger as well considering Ai’s history, interesting to see her quick change. Also, shout to Melt for stepping in helping someone who was clearly uncomfortable. I wish him luck as he us trying to improve and has realized his faults, characters like this are always my favorite. We’re heading into the play now, Aqua’s willing to pull out the stops, I only hope he won’t deal great damage to his own mental health in the process.

A: Very Good

Good episodes, anime I would recommend to someone looking for something to watch.

4. Days with my stepsister. Ep. 5

A big focus on Shiori this episode, I do enjoy her character. There is something that lingers on her mind, I hope we find out more about it as the anime continues. Ayase is also hard at work studying, with some luck She’ll be sure to pass her retest. The movie animations were also very cute, the team behind this anime continues to impress me with directing and art style that puts even bigger productions to shame.

6. Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! Ep. 3

She confessed! Very glad Shintarou saved Chika from being burned. The beach episode is a slice of life, romance, comedy, school-life, at times shonen, must have episode and this was a good one that focused on the third girl of our main cast. She’s sweet and adorable, and I can only imagine the courage it took to utter her confession, but I fear it may not turn out well for her. Whatever the results, I hope the others will help her feel better, or, if it goes well, celebrate. Given the story so far however, It may be best to prepare for some consoling. I’d like to compliment the team behind this anime so more, the animation is stellar, awesome job. Voice acting, music, and story so far is also great, the entire team is just doing great!

8. No Longer Allowed in Another World. Ep. 4

Sensei is best guy of the season in a heavy season. It’s difficult to tell if he’s really smart, or just doesn’t fear death at any moment. Him having confidence in faith in Annette was also nice. Suzuki’s story was very well done in the short time we had. Sensei’s words were harsh, but honesty is something Suzuki needed. His turn is understandable after a life of failure, but as Sensei said, his future depends on him. I’m glad we see Suzuki trying in the after credit scene, it’s the small steps that count and I wish the best for him.

5. The Elusive Samurai. Ep. 4

Very cool animation for the archery scenes. Sadamune has to be one of the creepiest characters I’ve seen in recent anime, his eyes bulging and the change in art style for him is top notch. I agree that archery may be a great boon for Tokiyuki, he could become a dangerous warrior in his own right if he can master it alongside his evasive skills. I look forward to next week, being hit only made him more excited as he realizes the dangers and possibility of being hit. Tokiyuki is a thrill seeker, so this only helps him yearn for that more, he’ll likely push his own limits now. This was orchestrated by Yorishige of course, he’s a master strategist and smart about his approach on teaching Tokiyuki.

7. Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest. Ep. 4

Didn’t expect a split personality for Touka, I also wonder just how powerful her magic is. Can she take away from anyone, or is there a limit? We’ll find out later I hope. It was nice to see some old faces today as well as how others are doing. Honestly seeing Brandish in a bikini made the episode well worth watching. Fights have also restarted, our main cast has the edge and, of course, the power of friendship behind them!

9. Suicide Squad Isekai

The bar fight was great, but I also wonder who the song was about if it wasn’t them. I hope they save Nana-Chan, he’s such a sweetheart even though he can swallow an entire human whole without struggle. The rest of the anime is leaning towards a final battle than the queen, I hope Fione will step up and help overthrow a clearly corrupt queen. This anime has been enjoyable overall and I look forward to the final episodes.

B: Good/Solid

10. My Wife Has No Emotion. Ep. 5

The power of a kiss knows no bounds, but being nearly knocked out by one must be a different experience. Now, I do look forward to the next episode and the reveal of Mina’s upgrades. I understand not wanting to accept the gift, but Mina showed how clever she is by accepting half of the catalogue. The upgrades do bring worries of course, will this change Mina? Will the changes make her something else entirely? It’s an age old question, but I believe there will still be love, what matters most is what’s inside, even if it may be a bunch of circuits and alloy, there is still the evidence of clear emotion from my point of view.

12. Why Does Nobody Remember Me in This World? Ep. 3

Hear me out, hear me out. Is Vanessa’s offer bad? Kai is better man than I, taking that offer within milliseconds would have been the best resistance I could give. The mystery of what has happened to the world continues, and it’s hinting at some sort of reincarnation. The strange robot that interrupted the fight has me interested as well, but not as much as Vanessa who total destruction spam spells, she’s awesome.

14. The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses Season 2. Ep. 4

I said “What are the odds?” and “Gah lee.” multiple times this episode. Unfortunate reality for Riho, but none of the girls are backing down. Happy for the girls and Chiyoda Diner, taking the direction for Japanese cuisine hopefully turns out well. Now, the battle for Hayato continues, now with a new found interest in sushi rolls as well. I’m interested in who will end up winning; each of the girls have attractive traits so it’s hard to decide who should win, whoever it is, I do hope we start getting some more clues in upcoming episodes.

11. The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies. Ep. 4

I adore the relationship between this two. Byakuya is such an innocent soul but Shun never takes advantage of this, instead choosing to care for her and treat her like a princess. The treats he buys for her always look delicious and that is a sign of true love. Byakuya saying she saying she is happy to learn more about Shun was great and shared the heartthrob with him. These two are my couple of the season, can’t wait for more.

13. Atri -My Dear Moments-

Anger often clouds reasoning and the ability to accept help. The anger conveyed in this episode is understandable, I commend Natsuki for taking on the chin and helping out anyway. Atri is still as adorable as ever, this episode also added some nice characters under difficult circumstances who I like already. I do hope their plan is successful, bringing light to their home could be the start of reconciliation, or at least the acceptance of each other’s circumstances.

15. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. Ep. 64

Benimaru is suffering from success in this episode. Some interesting lore drops to today, meeting your daughter at 15 must have been a surprise but Hakuroustepping up without question is admirable. Perhaps we have insight on future relationships in this one, I’ve always wondered if Rimuru will have a significant other, there are plenty of takers after all. I say change the genre to romance, maybe then I’ll be more interested. As of now, just another episode, not bad, not good, just another episode.

C: It’s ok/Fine

These are shows I happen to pick up but struggle to finish. Still watchable, but not without a good break in between episodes.

D: Do Not Recommend

Shows I do not recommend you not watch for various issues.

F: Bad

Anime with glaring issues that make them not only difficult to watch, but the watcher angry at times.
