Anime Summer 2024 Weekly Ranking July 19th to July 25th

These rankings are as of the episodes premiering July 19th to July 25th

S: Must Watch

Episodes I believe you must watch or are missing out on.

1. NieR:Automata Ver1.1a (Cour 2). Ep 3

As an anime this episode blew me away. I’m not afraid to call it episode of the season so far as well, despite the surprising amount of quality we’ve had so far. The intro monologue was a surprise, but I was still floored by the ending as well. The fact that the virus reached base is devastating, and now it is gone with only 2b and 9s left to continue their mission. 11/10 episode and this show deserves to be raved about.

3. Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf. Ep. 17

Lawrence’s greatest strength is his silver tongue. He made great use of it to draw Amati into a dangerous duel. I looked forward to this episode all week as I expected a quick resolution, but I enjoyed this more. For some time I’ve wondered of how capable Lawrence is, this arc aims to show us that. Not just his silver tongue, but his resilience as well. Seeing the marriage contract was heartbreaking, there is a chance Lawrence loses after all, but I’m sure he’ll manage. Still, will this be enough to heal the wounds in the relationship? We’ll have to see as more episodes come.

2. Oshi No Ko. Ep. 4

Very well done episode. Good to see the authors make something by collaborating, they clearly respect each others talents and just needed better communication. The focus of the episode is Aqua and his PTSD which is very well done. Remembering such a traumatic event and the blame he has placed on himself could only lead to his reaction, painful, but it will be something he must overcome, if he ever does. Now, Akane is the star of the episode for me. She’s a sweet girl, and I admire her hard work and kindness, but her decision at the end is what made me admire her most. impressive deductive skills aside, her decision to comfort Aqua without making her knowledge known or asking about it made her a my favorite girl of the show. I often wondered who I liked best, but her decision, the care she shows, makes me think of her as a gem.

A: Very Good

Good episodes, anime I would recommend to someone looking for something to watch.

4. Days with my stepsister. Ep. 4

This anime continues to impress with its directing and maturity. Showing effective communication, in this episode asking for help from others, is something often ignored in anime, but it is the highlight of todays episode. Of course, there is the different camera shots during scenes that convey the relaxed environment our step siblings now have, as well as a whole montage with some chill music in the background. Good, difficult to decide between this and the next two, so I’ll keep it here as it is still the show that has caught me off guard the most.

6. Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! Ep. 2

Heartbreak is a constant it seems. Finding out you’re crush has someone already is a pain I wish upon very few. Also, watching the debt increase great, at least more bento’s are on the way because of it. The storage room scenes were something else and well animated to boot, sure hope Nukumizu won’t suffer for it.

5. The Elusive Samurai. Ep. 3

Watching the crowd go from rowdy and excited to tired and ready to go home was great. The animation for this show continues to impress far beyond what I expected. The fight against the monster was great as well as Suma eating the entire thing. With just under two years to go, I wonder what more team mates we’ll get in that time. Overall, a great episode.

7. Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest. Ep. 3

I didn’t expect Touka to be the white witch, it makes me wonder why she has an obsession with Natsu. The fight against the dragon eaters rages on, and I need my fill of power of friendship that I’ve missed from the show. I hope they give it to us in full force. On a side note, I adore Lucy’s voice actress, man her voice is like silk to the ears. I honestly can’t remember if she always sounded like that, but she’s great.

B: Good/Solid

8. No Longer Allowed in Another World. Ep. 3

Very good episode, didn’t expect the reveal dark lord or someone declaring themselves to be or the battle itself. Of course, Sensei’s infinite charm kept them alive, for better or worse as the episode is named. It’s also nice to see Annette is cared and given the history of otherworlders I don’t blame anyone for not wanting Annette to stay with Sensei, but I do believe the upcoming episode will change this opinion, Sensei’s charisma is just that great.

10. My Wife Has No Emotion. Ep. 4

Our first introduction to a super Mina was nice. I didn’t think the difference would be that jarring, but they’re night and day. Also turns out our Mina is a limited edition which makes sense given how great she is. Favorite part of the episode was the memory card reveal that shows what Mina wishes to keep. Another moment that makes me think she does have emotions, or something of the like.

12. Why Does Nobody Remember Me in This World? Ep. 2

Moving forward, Kai understands the need for him to take the role of a legend. Some good developments in this episode as well, I’m glad the others decided to hear him out and accept his aid. Of course, I still have many questions, most of all why is in the different timeline and can he ever return? That question and some more keep this show interesting, I do hope we get some satisfying answers in the coming episodes or by the end of the season.

14. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

I get the appeal of this show. It’s a comfort watch with enjoyable characters. I love Shion and watching her shine this episode was great, but it also made me sigh about the issues with this show. There will never be stakes, I will bet money on that as I haven’t read the light novels. Because of that moments like we got today where the barrier is broken made me feel nothing. It could have been god himself and I would just think, Rimuru’s probably got a spell or some answer for it. Unfortunate, but it’s just the way the show is. I won’t say it’s bad, but the writing in this aspect is poor.

9. The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies. Ep. 3

Did not expect the familiar to meet a quick end this episode. Seeing our precious magical girl depressed at her job as a bottle girl made me sad, but that was soon taken care of.
Now, I do look forward to the upcoming episodes. Having Fomalhaut join on the haunt is sure to be troublesome and I look forward to see how it unfolds. If nothing else we'll get some more great scenes between our lovely duo.

11. The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses Season 2. Ep. 4

Can’t blame Hayato in this episode, I would have folded for a bunch of cute girls as well. Good episode, plenty of well done fan service which is the draw of the show by this point. Now, a great question to consider is who will the final girl be and if the news are in contention at all. Anime like this tend to drag on the decision and so far we have little clue. I like many of the girls, so it’s hard to root for just one, but I do hope we got some emphasis on this in the coming episodes.

13. Bye Bye, Earth. Ep. 2

Oh man the ending is great. Now, Belle was pretty cool this episode, if nothing else she is brave. I wonder if she carry her nerf of being unable to cut others however, as a traveler this could pose problems. Still, should problems arise she can just smash through them instead. Not a bad episode, but I’m still left wanting for more.

C: It’s ok/Fine

These are shows I happen to pick up but struggle to finish. Still watchable, but not without a good break in between episodes.

D: Do Not Recommend

Shows I do not recommend you not watch for various issues.

F: Bad

Anime with glaring issues that make them not only difficult to watch, but the watcher angry at times.
