Anime Summer 2024 Weekly Ranking July 12th to July 18th

These rankings are as of the episodes premiering July 12th to July 18th

S: Must Watch

Episodes I believe you must watch or are missing out on.

1. NieR:Automata Ver1.1a (Cour 2). Ep 2

Fantastic episode, the twist of the reverse hacking dropped my jaw and broke my heart. Wonder how 2B will be affected if at all, but we’re following 9S whose stroke of luck kept him safe. Also, I’m interested in what those two girls are, and how they are involved in the turn of the war.

3. Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf. Ep. 16

Wasn’t what I expected Lawrence to be running to, but I can’t blame anyone for falling for Holo. The challenge is interesting, and I believed Holo would choose Lawrence given how they share a goal and have wonderful chemistry, but the ending changes everything. Holo’s hometown is destroyed, and there is little he can do to promise she will not be all alone again. Major respect for not just having sex with her given her state of mind, but this makes things all the more difficult. What options does he have? It’s impossible for him to promise she will not be alone, nor does he see giving her a child as the best option, though another may be more than willing to. This is the biggest threat to their relationship yet, and I can say that for once, I’m worried that they may separate. Of course, I hope not, but keeping the secret from Holo has now caused a major tear in their relationship that will not be easy to recover from. Best of luck Lawrence, while he makes many mistakes, I do believe he’s Holo’s best companion.

2. Oshi No Ko. Ep. 3

Really enjoyed the scenes between the two mangaka this episode. It’s understandable why Abiko is so set on protecting her baby as she witnessed the treatment of one of her favorite shows in Sweet Day. It’s understandable but I do hope there is a middle ground to be reached as creating something for the stage will be difficult and could even kill Abiko. Looking forward to the next episode, not for the resolution, but for the outfits of the girls. I’m impressed by how well so many of them dress, the design team is going crazy with their outfits.

A: Very Good

Good episodes, anime I would recommend to someone looking for something to watch.

4. Days with my stepsister. Ep. 3

The best episode so far. I have to commend the animation team for the wonderful animation and directing of this anime so far. The different angles, the change of style, the silent scenes, all and so much more make this such an enjoyable watch. I truly expected this to be another slop for the season, but it’s left a great impression so far. The mature take on the step sibling story line is being done very well and I look forward towards the future of these two, though I’m not sure what I wish for them together, I do hope it ends with happiness. Wonderful episode, wonderful animation, wonderful plot. I’m holding off on giving this an S, but if the anime continues with this quality, it will be my surprise hit of the season.

6. Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines!

Anime like this are what make the animation medium such a pleasure to watch, absolute visual spectacle from start to finish. The characters are expressive, the art style is great, the colors are vivid, A1 is pouring love into this one. The main girls are also a diverse cast that have me interested as well. Kazuhiko, our narrator and MC, is also nice to watch. He’s the nervous archetype, but not to the extent that is annoying, simply a socially inept guy who’s hoping for s stroke of luck in the love department. Now, how about the story itself? I’ll take it, the story of young love is like a fleeting flame, painful, short lived, but often beautiful. Watching a story about this brings back some fond memories and I look forward to seeing how the story progresses.

5. The Elusive Samurai. Ep. 2

Another episode with Magnum Opus levels of animation. The fight is some of the best I’ve seen all year, even when compared to fighting focused anime. Nice to see an introduction of our helping cast as well, I like them both. The most important part of the story is Tokiyuki having reality hit him, but also keeping the conviction to move forward into the future. We have two years given his age, but I’m rooting for our MC.

7. Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest

Arrival of the water dragon god! Most importantly, I now remember why Lucy was one of my biggest crushes as a young boy watching this show for the first time. She’s such a charming character with, respectfully, a beautiful design. Also interesting to see the introduction of the dragon eaters, but I do wonder what road the team will take moving forward as they’ve revealed that sealed can be done in many different ways, perhaps this one won’t need a fight. At least, only until Natsu can contain himself.

B: Good/Solid

8. No Longer Allowed in Another World. Ep. 2

I admire Sensei’s commitment to double suicide, I hope to have conviction anywhere near as great as his one day. I enjoyed the twists with the marriage candidates, one simply stinks, the other is just annoying, it makes sense the princess wouldn’t want to marry them. Nice episode overall that that gave some great insight into Sensei’s character. He’s level headed and clever, something we don’t often see in Isekai so it’s a nice change of pace. He’s so likeable that I hope his dream of double suicide comes true one day.

10. My Wife Has No Emotion. Ep. 3

This show is very cute, our main relationship is just so sweet. Seeing Mina with a different hair style and new clothes was also great. Must say, super Mina caught me off guard, the differences are jarring, though Mina wins in the sweetness department which holds great weight in my opinion. Also, MVP sister!

12. Bye Bye, Earth

Pretty good start to this anime, sacrificing memories is a difficult choice but Belle’s desire. The fight at sea was fine as well; although Lidenfilms aren’t known for great action, their work in Call of the Night proved what they are capable of. I have to point this out however, Kevin Penkin is making the score for the anime. If you are familiar with his work then his work alone is worth watching something, I just hope the show will carry on and excel with it’s promising premise.

9. The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies. Ep. 2

The cat’s voice at the end is perfect. Mimori needs some better company which Miller is sure to be and I hope he can get her out of the clutches of whatever underhanded business she has fallen into. I do hope she stays a magical girl however, she’s simply made for it.

11. Why Does Nobody Remember Me in This World?

Not a bad start for this anime. The plot seems to be leading for Kai becoming the hero of legend through a cruel twist of fate. I wonder if the others will ever remember, or if he must accept his fate. Whatever the case, he’ll have a cute angel at his side.

C: It’s ok/Fine

These are shows I happen to pick up but struggle to finish. Still watchable, but not without a good break in between episodes.

D: Do Not Recommend

Shows I do not recommend you not watch for various issues.

F: Bad

Anime with glaring issues that make them not only difficult to watch, but the watcher angry at times.
