Anime Spring 2024 Overall Rankings
These rankings are as of the episodes premiering May 17th to May 23rd
S: Must Watch
Anime I believe you must watch or are missing out on.
Mushoku Tensei
Wonderful story following Rudeus in a new life. Season 2 has been stellar and part 2 has been great.
3. KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! 3
More Konosuba, had high expectations for the comedy and it does not disappoint.
5. Urusei Yatsura
Fantastic remake filled with comedy, unbelievable voice acting, great animation, great music, and some heart felt moments that are wonderful to see. I think this is show is incredibly underrated, give it a shot and have some fun.
2. Dungeon Meshi
Starts a fun story with an admirable goal to save a loved one while surviving by living off monsters. Once the comedy, creativeness in foods, drama, and character revelations hit, the series takes off to another level.
4. Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf
A great story following two intriguing characters on a journey filled with bartering, drama, and some cute animation of a lovable character.
A: Very Good
Good watches, anime I would recommend to someone looking for something to watch.
6. Kaiju No. 8
I love a good shonen. The first episodes of Kaiju No. 8 have been good with stellar animation and likable characters. Looking forward for what is to come.
8. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Hashira Training Arc
With only one episode out I’m cheating with the placement as I’ve read the manga. Episode one does give us some beautiful animation and music that we’ve become accustomed to, and though this will be more of a setup season, I believe it will be an enjoyable watch.
7. Wind Breaker
There are some studios that offer confidence when they are behind the production of a show, Cloverworks such a studio. Wind Breaker is just what I expected, cool characters, great animation and fight choreography, and a tsundere MC. Well, that last one I didn’t expect, but I’ll take it.
B: Good/Solid
Anime I believe are worth watch if you’d like, but not at the top of my recommendations.
9. An Archdemon's Dilemma: How to Love Your Elf Bride
It wouldn’t take a lot to convince me to put this in A. The representation of awkwardness and social ineptitude is done very well, the relationship between the leads is great. Overall, enjoyable. Also, the OST for this anime is impressive.
11. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 3
This will change as the season progresses but, as of now, I must place it here. I love worldbuilding, the characters we’ve grown to love are there, and I enjoyed the previous seasons. But the show has fallen into a yapping spree once again. I don’t mind this in shows, in fact I encourage it as it can add depth and is far more intriguing than endless action. But six episodes of it is pushing it. There is a lot of information to give, but it would have been better if they found a different way to convey it. For example, instead of having them tell us the size of the army, show the army marching. The scene would create much more suspense with simple narration over it. I believe the season overall will be exceptional, even for someone like me who isn’t the biggest fan. For now however, this is the best I can give it.
10. Chillin' in Another World with Level 2 Super Cheat Powers
Ok, I’m a sucker for cute anime girls and my seasonal generic isekai. The show itself is cute, but what brings it up for me is the crazy sugar rush I get every time the opening plays.
12. Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again
A story exploring mortality and what two loving individuals would do with time and health. It’s heartwarming and the memory arc was well done with a satisfying conclusion. I recommend.
C: It’s ok/Fine
These are shows I happen to pick up but struggle to finish. Still watchable, but not without a good break in between episodes.
13. Studio Apartment, Good Lighting, Angel Included
Let me start by saying that I have built a seething hatred for the shy, never been touched by a woman MC archetype. But, as I am weak myself, I was lured into watching the show. The relationship between the leads is nice, and there are some clear arcs I hope they take advantage of early in the show. If nothing else, just add a tournament arc, that will get me to watch any day.
D: Do Not Recommend
Shows I do not recommend you not watch for various issues.
14. The Banished Former Hero Lives as He Pleases
There is place in every season for generic isekai anime. They are the rice to the omurice or the skippable sequence in a video game; nice, filling, and at times entertaining. This how makes me giggle. The animation is poor, the story is as basic as it can get, but do me a favor. Watch episode 3 starting from 17:20 until just after 17:28, that sound direction made me laugh so hard that I can’t put this in bad anymore. Now, not every studio can pump out incredible levels of animation at all times, but when a show like this must be made, I recommend studios take the direction of KamiKatsu. Yes, the budget is low, so at least have fun with it. With that said, do not watch this show.
F: Bad
Anime with glaring issues that make them not only difficult to watch, but the watcher angry at times.
