Anime Summer 2024 Weekly Ranking September 6th to September 12th

These rankings are as of the episodes premiering September 6th to September 12th

S: Must Watch

Episodes I believe you must watch or are missing out on.

1. NieR:Automata Ver1.1a (Cour 2). Ep 21

I’m very sick right now, coughing up a storm. And yet, as I watched this episode, I was quiet. I was at a loss for words. Very few anime make me feel this type of despair, maybe season 2 of Made in Abyss, or the end of the Mereum arc in HxH. How everything unfolds in this anime is just incredible, acts of kindness have unfortunate results, bittersweet endings leave me speechless. The resistance camp, though I would have liked to see more of them, left an impression on me and seeing them go out, especially Lily, is heartbreaking. I can’t recommend any other show more than this for the season. I look forward to the end, but I’ll need to prepare my heart and mind for it.

2. Oshi No Ko. Ep. 10

No, I don’t believe Aqua’s hunt is over. The trip back to Miyazaki is sure to come with twists and reveals, specifically with the reveal of a new character in the closing scenes. Still, it was nice to Aqua have a sincere smile for once, though it will make it more heart breaking ifit is taken from him once again as he desire for revenge returns, should it do so that is. With the closing of the play we have a new focus on B Komachi and the girls. Watch Akane, Kana is going to get some alone time with Aqua. I would enjoy if Aqua could settle with one of them and live a peaceful life, but something tells me we are far from that reality. Whatever reveals are to come, I look forward to them all.

A: Very Good

Good episodes, anime I would recommend to someone looking for something to watch.

3. Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! Ep. 9

I really like Komari, she’s just very relatable. She’s also a sweetheart which makes it heartbreaking to see her classmates leave her out. I agree with Nukumizu on the reason she is trying to so hard as well. It’s a way to show her appreciation to some very special that have helped in her school life. Seeing everyone come together to put the display together was also very nice. Very enjoyable episode, but I’m pretty sure Konuki is going to end up on a list. Also! Laws of physics were very questionable this episode, specifically with 8k.

5. The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies. Ep. 10

No interaction between Shun and Byukayu makes me sad, but we’re getting more of it next episode! I’m sure Shun will do whatever possible to get some time with with his favorite magical girl during the end of year party, I just hope Byukuya will find some free time from her convenience store, marketing, construction, and whatever other job she’s working in this dreadful economy. Also, cat familiar is one cool looking dude, too bad he’s a scumbag. But I do wonder what the reason for him taking another form is.

4. Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf. Ep. 23

I have great news! This anime is going to 25 episodes! I’m really glad to find that out as I thought we only had one left. The villagers in this episode were as bad as those in No longer allowed in another world. It’s understandable for the hysteria to build, but their unwillingness to think of anything other than to blame others is awful. Lawrence and Holo are going to help their fellow suspects escape but I wonder if that will be the end of it. The fairy who makes beer is the goat this episode, at least she has a good head on her shoulders. Man, I will miss Holo and Lawrence banter when it’s all over, let’s cherish it while we still have it. And, just maybe, we’ll get another season.

6. No Longer Allowed in Another World. Ep. 10

Ah yes, love rules all. Also there is no god! Big tragedy this episode with Sensei’s casket being destroyed, but Annette is loaded so we’ll get another soon. We arrive at a war between dwarves an a fallen other worlder this episode, with Wolf, area’s local Annette, showing off his own prowess. Though I agree that he should be ashamed for not doing such a terrible job in helping Sensei reach his demise. I wonder what his connection is with the older lady, and it is saddening to see his student become evil. Whatever revelations come, Sensei is surely to make some great moves as everyone else is fighting for their lives. On a side note, R.I.P Chavez.

7. Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest. Ep. 10

Levy is pregnant?!!!! Also, Erza, my gawd. Fun episode with a big reveal that made me go back and check if I missed the reveal before. Very happy for Gajeel and Levy. Still, my gawd Erza. Moving on to new fights, the dragon eaters are here and with new members. I wonder if the dragon god will make an appearance soon, or if they will start to move. Whatever the case, the fights are fun and I look forward to them.

9. Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian. Ep. 11

The devilish smile is genetic. Yuki isn’t afraid to use underhanded tactics to gain an edge, she’s a terrifying opponent who we still don’t know the full capabilities of. Masachika is also capable himself, though he prefers not to show it. Now, here’s my issue with my show and many like it. I don’t like how often Alya is shown to be hopeless without Masachika’s help. We had the issue with sports team, the surprise debate, and now this. I understand that the siblings are likely trained from birth to be prodigies, but it’s annoying to have Alya be hopeless this often. I’m sure eventually she will show her talents, but I do wish she wasn’t at a loss without Masachika so often. That’s my only complaint, Alya is still voiced by my favorite voice actress so I must watch!

8. Days with my stepsister. Ep. 11

Only one episode left :(. I can best describe this anime as healthy relationships. We explore the dynamics of step siblings through Saki and Yuuta, the different issues that come with it, but also the possibility of finding a great supporting person in life by chance. That way the step sibling trope has been handled in this anime is very mature, so even if the two do end up together it would be because they find someone they trust in each other and not just a bunch of chance, lewd, interactions. Of course, I believe this will not happen. Am I against it? Hmm, I don’t know. With the introductions of other characters, with one being said to be interested in Saki, I believe the story will end up with them apart. I also enjoy how Akiko’s relationship with Yuuta is explored. There is awkwardness, but the two takes things slow and let their relationship build without forcing the matter. Yuuta is also very mature which helps as well. Overall, a very enjoyable watch.

B: Good/Solid

10. My Wife Has No Emotion. Ep. 11

I always enjoy Mina’s proud upward head tilt. This episode focused more on how other’s percieve thier realtiosnhip. It can certainly be seen as weird, but I believe Takuma cares for Mina just like a man would care for a human woman. We’ve seen over the entire season how much he cares for her and how she responds to this. And even if the world rejects the relationship, I believe Takuma will never let her go. Final episode next week which makes me sad, but I enjoyed this anime overall. It’s sweet and watching Mina’s antics is great.

12. The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses Season 2. Ep. 23

I like Akane; forward women are just great. That first kiss was great, but I liked the kiss with Riho even more as he caught her at a great moment. We have one more episode after this which is pointing to a focus on Ouka. So here we are again, who is endgame? Welllllllllllllll. I don’t know. Some girls are better, let’s make a tier list. S: Akane and Shiragiku. A: Riho. C: Ouka. Doesn’t care to participate (for now?): Ami. Who would I pick? Mao, no further questions.

11. Atri -My Dear Moments- Ep. 9

Everything before the opening was difficult to watch. The change in Atri’s eyes when told not to feign emotion was excellent but also heartbreaking. And then she also drops a bomb on Natsuki. Learning more about Atri’s past was great, I wonder what made her go berserk though I believe it is because she has a heart. A heart is such an abstract idea and Minamo said it best in that humans do the same in observing and deciding which option is best to react with. Whether he is willing to accept that or not is up to him. Seeing Atri get beat was difficult but hopefully we get her out of this. Reaching the final episode, I wonder what arc will follow this one.

13. 2.5 Dimensional Seduction. Ep. 10

Dear lord, Mayuri. That is all, I’m making this a lightning round! Mayuri is best girl! I hope we get a different cosplay one day and never forget why you love your passions in the first place! Did I mention Mayuri? Mayuri number 1!!!

C: It’s ok/Fine

These are shows I happen to pick up but struggle to finish. Still watchable, but not without a good break in between episodes.

D: Do Not Recommend

Shows I do not recommend you not watch for various issues.

That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime

Some much needed action. Some of the fights were good, Geld vs lion mask stood out. I really like Geld, just seems like a cool guy. Uhm, Masayuki… yea. Gobta’s fighting style is smart, he’s a lot smarter than he lets out in combat. It’d be cool if he won, but I’d like it to be in a decisive manner, or after a good fight. What else, what else, that’s it. I can’t really say I can give this season good marks for a decent episode towards the end.

F: Bad

Anime with glaring issues that make them not only difficult to watch, but the watcher angry at times.
