Dusk Beyond the End of the World: The Tragedy of Towasa

dusk

Hello everyone! It’s been some time since I’ve written a blog post, it’s been a crazy year for me! Moved, tried a new job, quit, moved back, built my own website, and that was just 5 months into the year. But of course, despite the craziness, my love for anime remained the same.

We’ve had some incredible anime this year, Gachiakuta, Call of the night, Rascal, Takopi, good lord Takopi. And yet, amongst all the great anime we’ve had this year, one has stuck with me just a little more; not because it’s great or terrible, but because I believe it could have been so much more.

Today, I’ll talk about Dusk Beyond the End of the World.

Dusk Beyond the end of the World is a story that follows Akira, Yugure, and Amoru as they travel through a world devasted by war. Akira’s goal is to find someone from his past life, Towasa; the creator of androids, the world leading organization, and also the reason for the war. Throughout the story we get some great twists, nice action, and disappointing resolutions.

The ending of the story leaves a lot to be desired. Polygamy is introduced as the norm in this world, yet our main character is vehemently against it. This is fine, but the insistence of writing a character pushing for it while the others continue to reject or avoid the idea builds annoyance for both sides as issues like this could be settled with simple communication.

That’s not the only issue of course. Many of the antagonist in this story share a similar goal in chasing someone that can only be found through the main cast. It is a way to create conflict, but I believe the main conflict could have been different, and stronger because of it. Instead, ideas are brought to a quick end near the final two episodes, and I was left wondering why these decisions were made.

So where did it all go wrong? Well, I hate to say this. The issues all stem from one thing. Just like the issues of this world stem from Towasa, the biggest issues with Dusk Beyond the End of the World also stem from Towasa.

Towasa: A Tragic Character

Towasa

Towasa Oumagi is a young leading genius in A.I and other technology. Her research is revolutionary, but this brings criticism as some fear just how far she has gone and the unforeseen repercussions. Among her creations is the ability to connect the mind to technology such as the internet and allow people to view screens and the like. Revolutionary, and all of Towasa’s intentions are for the betterment off humankind.

But not all people have the good intentions that Towasa has.

Her research is eventually used to hack into the minds of people. With most of the population now using her technology, this leads to mass hysteria and chaos around the world. Towasa, desperate to find a fix for this, creates an all-powerful A.I that goes rogue and attempts to destroy the world. Once again, her efforts to help the world all go wrong.

Alongside Akira, Towasa will create androids that save the world from total destruction. Saving what is left of the world and creating OWEL, a new world order with the intentions of preventing a war like this from ever happening again. Her job now down, Towasa disappears to repent for her sins.

Everything Towasa did was with good intentions, but the poor girl never caught a break. Her disappearance was as much to repent for her sins, as it was to finally give her a break after years of struggle and pain.

Unfortunately, even after passing, Towasa would not be allowed to rest.

The Continued Issue

Centuries after the war, we are introduced to a new Akira. He is eventually revealed to be an android created by his original person to search for Towasa.

But he is not the only person searching for Towasa. Yoiyami, another of the androids, is also searching for Towasa, as is the final surprise villain who wishes to meet with her.

For the entirety of the series, we are on a journey in search for Towasa. Throughout this journey, we are faced with the corruption infesting OWEL, and how the world has changed since the war. Our main antagonist also causes issues, nearly killing the main crew in the hopes of finding Towasa.

But, if you remember a few lines earlier, Towasa is dead.

That is the main issue here. Everyone is in search of Towasa, it is the driving force beyond the actions of the main characters. All they wish to do is speak with her.

This is impossible however, and the reveal that she is dead at the end of the series leaves an incredibly bad taste as much of the journey and conflict seem pointless since one of the main characters, Yugure, knew this all along.

Had Yugure told everyone that Towasa was gone, the entirety of the plot is forced to change, and I believe we could have had something wonderful because of it.

My heart breaks for Towasa. Not only did she live a life of struggle and heartbreak when only wanting to help humanity, but the writers of this show drag her name by using her as a plot device that falls short when the truth is revealed.

What Could Have Been

Each story is unique and has its good qualities, but I’d like the chance to imagine a different route that could have added more to the story, or at least taken away some of what I believe hindered it. Of course, to some the story as it is may be good enough, but I can see the potential and am saddened to see it fall short.

My changes begin right at the start with Akira’s awakening. This was great and gives us so much to explore and a great reveal later on. But! I believe the reveal of him being an android should come much sooner. In this case, in episode 1 to help defend against the corrupt members of OWEL. Not only this! But we end with the reveal that Towasa is dead to cap off the episode. This leaves Akira lost on his purpose of what to do in the coming episode, something he will be forced to find for himself.

Episode 2 is just as important. We meet Amoru and since we clearly didn’t want to go all in on the polygamy, we only deepen their relationship in this episode, but end it by the end of episode 3. This will break her heart, something necessary for her to leave and become part of the story later. In these two episodes, we also sprinkle in what will be Akira’s purpose: helping Towasa’s last gift to the world be what it was meant to be.

For much of the season, Akira fights the corruption of OWEL. Helping Oboro and even meeting the human Akira who can give him advice on this. Guess what! The main antagonists of the current anime have no reason to fight, and! We can even get more of the outside series androids to help in this effort as that is one thing we sadly did not get.

This effort is difficult however, and towards the last third of the season years have past and the crew is almost successful in rooting out the evil. Who is at the head of this evil however? None other than Amoru!

dusk

Why Amoru you ask? This is simple. Throughout this anime, Amoru is searching for place to belong, desperately clinging to Akira and Yugure despite the way they keep distance from her. In the second and third episodes, she believes it would be with them but is forced to leave and continue her search. Eventually, she finds a place with the corrupt side of OWEL who groom her to become their leader.

This creates a conflict within Akira and Yugure who realize that they handled their relationship with Amoru poorly. Furthermore, Amoru taking over can be a direct challenge to the philosophy of OWEL. While many are corrupt just for power and greed, her goal could be that she disagrees with how OWEL does things. Keeping books and information away from people without much explanation are the most prominent, but she will have other grievances that push her to take over.

We can end with some cool fights, and the death of Amoru, a tragic ending for my favorite character of the series.

And that is it. Akira and Yugure swear to make OWEL better for Towasa and Akira, and swear to prevent cases like that of Amoru.

In Conclusion

There is so much more I wanted from this anime, but I believe they chained themselves to certain ideas that didn’t allow them to explore or use more. Unfortunately, the chain also causes frustration in the viewer that takes away from what is good in this anime.

We had great fights, we had great moments, but if you ask me what I wanted most, then that is easy. A harem baby!

In all seriousness, this is still a decent watch even if just for the cool fights and interesting world. I hope they let Towasa rest now, I’m giving it an…7/10

It's time to say goodbye to this crazy year and look forward to another great one of anime! I'll be more active with my posts, though life seems to take crazy turns that I can never predict. Happy new years everyone!
